Stephen

Studied the Classics and Biology in school and eventually ventured to an apprenticeship in 2014 on a biodynamic farm in Maryland. It was here that his love for the natural world and sharing good food overlapped and catalyzed the agricultural journey that now lives on as New Roots.

Krista

Studied fine arts and psychology in college. She felt an urge to live a life closer to nature as a part of her healing process. This lead her to a part-time job at Flying Plow Farm where she met Stephen. Following their dreams eventually brought them to Southern Appalachia, where they learned small-scale, low till growing practices while interning at Goldfinch Gardens.

The Land

New Roots Market Garden is nestled on two acres of bottomland adjacent to the Bend of Ivy Lodge in Marshall, NC. The land, historically Native American settling ground, is situated alongside Ivy Creek and surrounded by forested slopes. This provides deep energy and a diverse ecosystem that is well equipped to support holistic, bio-intensive agriculture.

Stephen and Krista are graduates of The Organic Growers School’s Farm Beginnings Program. They stay involved in their community by sharing their knowledge and experiences on holistic and sustainable growing methods. They view small-scale, holistic agriculture as a way to grow more resilient communities rooted in the natural world.
